Philly Free Streets
Inspired by the street closures during Pope Francis' visit to Philadelphia in 2015, this inaugural open streets event was designed to give people the chance to walk, jog, bike, skate, and experience nearly 10 miles of carless streets.
The route extended from South Street (from 2nd Street to the South Street Bridge over the Schuylkill Expressway), along the Schuylkill River Trail, Martin Luther King Drive, and into West Fairmount Park.
For all the nay-sayers (and there are always nay-sayers with anything involving this city), I saw more people enjoying South Street between 7am and 9am than you see during peak eating/drinking/shopping times. Families, friends, and of course photographers...bringing the community together one closed street at a time.
Fingers crossed for an expanded route in 2017!
